Eko Meets Smokey

Given the recent Black Smoke (well, it was more like a grey colour, actually) activity in Dead Is Dead I thought it would be good, for these Finest Moments clips, to take a look at the moment when Mr. Eko confronted Smokey for the first time, and we got our first good luck at the thing.

When I first watched the episode (The 23rd Psalm) I thought we were just going to get another 'monster's eye view' shot, the same way we did when Locke encountered it. So it was a real jaw-dropping moment when we got a good look at what this thing was that had been smashing through the jungle and killing pilots.

That we then got to go though the thing was just a whole new level of surprise. . .

If anyone was under any illusions about just how hard Mr. Eko was, you only have to see him staring down the Black Smoke to be left in no doubt. Oh I do miss him.

The real quality of this moment lies in the fact that, although you may have caught little flashing glimpses of the images within the Black Smoke there's no way you could have understood exactly what was going on there. That's where the good old Internet came into play, adding another level to this amazing scene, with us more devoted Lost fans heading online and discovering that the images that briefly flashed were actually snapshots from Eko's past.

Not only had we now seen 'the monster' for the first time, we were given a whole new means of thinking about what it was doing ('scanning' as a mean of making judgement) and therefore what the thing was. Calling it a 'monster' was not really sufficient after this moment. Oh no. The Black Smoke revealed for the first time showed it was much, much more than just a mere monster.

This still goes down as my favorite scene/episode moment in the history of Lost. I could seriously watch this over and over again. I really wonder what Eko's fate and character would have been if the Actor didn't want off the show.

Either way...I miss the greatness that was Season 2. I'll love the show all the way to its end, but moments like this remind me how great the show was in Season 2! Still its best season to date!

The more that I think about it the more I think that Smokie wears two hats, one is a security device and the other is a moral judge. If you consider all of Smokies appearances.

As a security device -

*Attacking Keamy and the mercenaries

*Depiction on the blast door map

*Wiping out Danielle’s crew and Danielles later comments

As a Moral Judge

*Judging Ben in the temple

*Niki being bitten by the Medusa Spider(wow, that episode was good for something!!)

*Confronting and killing Mr. Eko

*Confronting John Locke

*Our pilot (I can’t remember if it was the guy who took the place of Lapedis)

One case where it is hard to tell either way.

Kate & Juliet, when chasing these two we don’t actually know who he was after. Maybe he was just looking to get himself some tail!!

I would say that as a security device he is working under instruction but as a moral judge he would answer to himself.

Wow AC - you know you've made it big time when TROLLS have invaded your blog :)

I wonder if ALL of Smokey's actions (as both security system and moral judge) can be considered as merely serving the best interests of the Island. That's perhaps a tidier way of viewing it, and also sidestepped any messy moral issues regarding what branch of moral code it judges people by.

Achara - If I'm going to attract Trolls I'd like to hope I'd attract a better class of Troll!

I am still not convinced Smokey is a being who acts without a MASTER. Meaning...I still think there is a wizard of OZ scenario going on here...just a hunch though...I have no clue who, what , wher or WHEN that maybe taking place

Check out this link with the sound up for the expose thing.

Also, I've just watched this and I had forgot about the time that it tried to drag John into a hole. Jack was able to hold onto Locke and save him. If Smokie can rip up trees by their roots and fling mr. Eko around I'm not sure how it could lose a tug-o-war with Jack. Perhaps it was a test for Jack.

Heh, Anonymous Troll. I am amused. THAT'S more like the standard of trolling I want!

Achara, is it not viable to consider the Island as Smokey's master?

And the other Anonymous - about Jack keeping Locke out of the hole. I like the idea that it was a test for Jack, but I don't think that was the way of it. Confusing as it is, I think Locke was genuinely snatched by the Black Smoke to be taken. Possibly it was because he was determined to open 'the hatch' and that wad not what the Black Smoke wanted.

How come Jack could keep him from being dragged away? Well, even Montand got held on to for some time before his arm came off. I guess Kate just lobbed that stick of dynamite down quick enough before Locke got ripped apart!

AC - Viable? Yes...I suppose so. But I still think the island is man made or controlled by man...so, I still am in the camp who believes there is a MAN (or men and women) BEHIND THE CURTAIN in all of this. However...I won't be dissapointed if I'm wrong...the island as its' own being is not the worse case scenario...(like aliens or insane asylum would be)

When Sawyer and the rest of the guys saw the statue, they were right above the donkey wheel, weren't they, as well as behind the statue.

So, would be it that "lies in the shadow of the statue"? The donkey wheel and whatever the hell is more down there?

Oh, and sorry about the comment having nothing to do with the post..hahaha...

Was just wondering here...

Acharaisthekey said...

Corellian....I am with you 100%....my thought is that it is the FDR that is in the shadow of the statue!!

crap..i mean FDW....

I thought that the statue was a bit too far away from Sawyer and co to cast a shadow over them.

Besides, we've already seen the Franklin D. Roosevelt!

What I mean is, the donkey wheel has been done - whereas whatever Bram and Ilana are after us surely to be a new revelation. (Jughead has been a good guess and, considering there's a war coming, would certainly make sense as an acquisition.)
